Kung Fu Fighting

I have never not had a song in my head.

Right now it is Kung Fu Fighting by who-the-fuck-cares
Before that it was Waiting for the Summer by Yeasayer
Before that it was Cupid by Sam Cooke
Before that it was Why you Wanna Break my Heart by CRUCIAL TAUNT

I could go on for days but not accurately. My point is really a question, is there a name for this? Is this normal? Most of my friends seem to experience this too...

  1. this has been called "last song syndrome", though i'm not sure if it's official.

i found an interesting blog though: http://hormoneguru.wordpress.com/2007/10/28/songs-stuck-in-your-head-broken-record-syndrome-part-1/

it makes me wonder what goes through the head of people who don't listen to music. for example, my roommate sarah. she doesn't care about music at all. doesn't listen to it, doesn't mind it, could definitely live without it. isn't that insane??! the only song we know she likes is "mary susan" by blood on the wall, and only because it was on her myspace page forever. she later claimed this was only because she didn't know how to change it.

occasionally, she text me whens she is at home drunk with some people over and i'm not home asking how to play my itunes. "hey how do i put on girl talk?"

oh yeah, that's the other music she likes. girl talk. a mish mash shit show of a dj song combined 50 other songs all rolled into one. weird hey.

sometimes i would like to make a blog solely dedicated to sarah and her daily activities.

  2. It really does blow my mind when people don't listen to music as obsessively as myself and all my friends. In fact most of my friends are deeply bonded because of our music obsession. Not even obsession, it just IS life. That is what life is. Sounds and melodies. Fuck that sounds corny!
Srsly though, what on earth else do people think about in their free time??

I'm reading a book called Musicophilia, mainly because it taps on synesthesia which is what I have (not a disease, just a condition I guess) and there are a few phenomena's documented where a person has had a life changing experience (being struck by lightening, brain aneurysm, heavy shit) that have sparked their musical conditions including those listed on that blog you mentioned.

One man in particular, not musical at all, straight up Sarah R about it was struck by lightening and within a few months was able to play the piano like a professional, playing back pieces by ear! Composing in his head constantly! Almost like a disease. He could and still cannot escape it! Isn't that fucked? I get so excited about this kind of thing...
