First of all, got a sweet window seat. 10 points. Then, ran into a friend of mine from Vancouver, also on his way home for Christmas. We talked about 60's and 70's radio gems (my favorite thing) ukulele's and how there is nothing worse than being bored, even if it means you exhaust yourself by playing in 39 000 bands. 26 points.
After he left, a boy, at this point ageless to me, in a cool dude leather jacket and headphones sits down besides me and inquires about my book (A Moveable Feast by Hemmingway). Being in a talkative mood for once, I don't give him go-away vibes and strike a convo with him. He had a baby face and really nice skin so I assumed he was 18, maybe 19. However, this kid, after impressing me with his extensive underground musical and beat-poetry knowledge, informs me he's the big 1-6. WOW. Since when are 16 year olds so current, up to date hipsters with an opinion and cool style?
I was still in my ADIDAS-hoop earings-Incubus phase when I was that age. I'm in no way complaining right now, and i'm not going to whip out the whole "we had less technology and were therefore more creative" bullshit I HAVE heard before. I was SO excited, this kid had heard of everything from The Sunday Service (went to their show the night before), Mother Mother, various post-rock bands I can't even name because I'm not really into that sort of thing, music blogs like CBC radio 3... Seriously. This is one of the most optimistic moods I have ever been in and I owe it to this youngblood. Godspeed you young emporer, Daniel. You'll be alright.
