I mean, it is hilarious, and I've always known that since picking it up at age 11, but this recent wave of pop culture's bass bandwagon is out of control! Since I have nothing better to do this Sunday afternoon, I shall explore some of the bass stereotypes. Not too much detail though, because I really want an iced latte.
Exhibit A:
Rob Trujillo. Fancys the 5-string, likes flat wounds, favors the Ibanez. I owned an Ibanez and flat wounds too once. Check. Other bassers falling under this particular "niche" would be any guy from any cock rock band in the last 15 years. Especially the likes of God Smack, Linkin Park, Seether, etc...
Exhibit B:
Jaco Pastorius. The "bass players bassist". He plays high on the neck, cool, me too, but shit, its like Seinfeld on speed every time he plays. This is the man most music shop loiterers base their entire life on. Aesthetic wise, eclectic, and hey I've gone down that path too. He died a very tragic death, sustaining fatal injuries from a nightclub fight. He was 35 years old!
Exhibit C:
Flea is a psycho hose beast on bass! He use to be my favorite when I liked RHCP. He is a pretty cool dude. Lots of energy, slaps like a mother fucker, plays a Music Man, and appears in random movies like Iggy Pop. Crazy, almost bald and sprightly.
Exhibit D:
The "who's that guy?" bassist.
And finally, Exhibit E:
The cool guy. Enough Said.
I forgot to include girls into the stereotyping because there are so few of us...
So there ya fuckin go
